The O&P profession has been emphasizing the need for outcome measures for over a decade with a focus on developing new instruments and establishing psychometric properties. However, as clinicians we care about what happens next; how do we apply these findings to our everyday clinical practice? Ecological validity examines whether a measure is generalizable to real-life settings, including medical justification to support reimbursement. The purpose of this presentation is to explore ecological validity and maximize return on investment for clinicians. Specific topics include using outcome measures to establish medical necessity, how data collection can be integrated seamlessly into clinical practice, and how clinical practice guidelines have been used to facilitate communication with physicians and within the Veterans Health Administration.
